To state the obvious, Lent is not an end to itself. The Israelites didn’t walk through the desert because that is where we want to end up. They walked through the desert because that is what they believed would eventually lead to the Promised Land.
Lent only makes sense in light of the Easter feast to come. In the same way, our acts of penitence and reflection only make sense in light of where they lead. Through this season of preparation we are given an opportunity to examine our lives so that we might grow in our understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. This season of Lent is about yearning to be more, not because it will make God love us more, but because it is who we were made to be. Lent is about acknowledging the unavoidable truth that leading a life of faith takes time and work.
