The Altar Guild is a dedicated and lively group that plays a behind-the-scenes but vital role in preparing our sacred space for weekly worship. We gather on Saturday mornings around 8:30 AM and usually wrap up by 9:30 AM. It’s an hour filled with purpose, teamwork, and a few good laughs. If you enjoy being part of a fun, faith-filled crew and love the idea of helping bring each service to life, the Altar Guild might be your perfect fit!
Alison Bettisworth elaborates on the ministry of Altarguild in Weekly Eucharist: A Sacred Tradition at Our Church
Every week, parishioners are invited to join together for the Eucharist, a sacred tradition that brings the community closer to God. Preparing the Eucharist table is akin to setting the table for guests at home, with the altar adorned in different colors and chalices according to the church calendar.
A dedicated team of parishioners sets the table each week, drawn to the Ministry for various reasons. Some have been involved since childhood, supporting their grandmothers and mothers, while others find it an opportunity to meet fellow parishioners in small groups across different services, building relationships. Working alone or with a few people in the church or chapel provides a peaceful environment to connect with God and deepen their spiritual connections.
Many grew up believing the altar and its items were untouchable, but now they have the chance to learn their names and history. The Altar Guild aims to dispel the mystery surrounding their work and invites anyone curious to reach out or drop by to see them after the service. They are eager to share their story and show you around, offering a glimpse into the Ministry’s meaningful work.
Nancy Lanning says,
“I have been a member of the Altar Guild since 1997 when a former rector said, “Why aren’t you in the Altar Guild?” I joined. I enjoy most the “behind the scenes” ministry of setting the Altar and getting the Church and the Chapel ready for service. The members of the Altar Guild work as a team to accomplish this. That is the best part. I had the honor of being the head of the Altar Guild, along with Susie Croll from 2004 – 2014 and am now the interim head until next year.”
Kathy Brown, our Senior warden says,
“Alter Guild is a time of meditation for me, but it is also a time to share our tradition of setting the altar with our youth. It brings me so much joy that the kids want to wash, dry, and put things away. They have a curiosity about what we do and why we do it. “
